Check Your Public Record Information Online
Now consumers have the ability to check their nationwide public records through a new product called a Public Information Profile (PIP). The PIP product uses a variety of personal and public information suppliers to allow consumers access to a comprehensive set of online searchable databases, including:
- Federal, State and County court records
- Government license databases
- Property ownership records
- Criminal conviction records
- UCC filings
The service is only available to persons to check public records on themselves. You are not able to perform a background check on others.
The service takes your personal identifying information and searches online information databases for information that matches or comes close to matching your personal information.
Of course there are limitations to the results returned mostly because there may be so much data returned that may belong to someone with a name similar to yours. It is your job to review the data and decide what data is yours and what is not. That’s the rub when you access online databases. However, the service is certainly much more than has previously been available to consumers, especially at an affordable price point.
But be advised the information is not as complete or accurate as a professionally prepared background search that uses real people to gather and review the information. Professional background checking companies may have access to data not in public databases. Also the report does not include private confidential information available like credit reports from the 3 national credit bureaus. Credit reports must be ordered separately. User Review of the PIP product :
I ordered and printed my report in July 2005. It was 174 pages long. As I expected, it included information that belonged to someone else who had the same name as me. Plus there was information on my report for someone with a different middle initial. For criminal records, again there were records that did not belong to me but belonged to someone with my same name but with a different birthdate.
Even though there was lots of information that did not belong to me, I am happy to have ordered the report because generally I believe too much information is preferable to none at all. Plus it’s just nice to have a comprehensive look at all the information under my name.
